History

The Muslim Coalition of Connecticut was founded by some of the local leaders realizing that the actions of extremists had resulted in unfair stereotyping of Muslims. The leadership of the Berlin, Waterbury and Hartford mosques met together with several other activists to start the organization.

It was officially founded in 2004 with goals of:

Educating the public on Islam and Muslims in a proactive way, through this started the speaker's bureau for outreach. We actively engage the media on events related to Islam and Muslims, through Op-Eds.
Providing leadership to the youth and actively involving them in the work of the organization and providing leadership to the founding of the MSA Connecticut council.
Living Islam through social activism (serving in shelters, walking against hunger and habitat for humanity builds) and involvement in important socially responsible actions (universal healthcare and addressing violence and environmental responsibility).
Building alliances with other faith communities and involving our board on the boards of other organizations (to address the need to get to know your Muslim neighbor).

Mission

Promote an accurate portrayal of Islam and Muslims in the mass media, popular culture and local community through education and outreach.
To educate the Muslim community about the US political system and opportunities to get involved.
To build alliances with Muslim and non-Muslim groups on important issues.
To establish leadership training of a future generation of Muslims.
To develop social service programs which address the needs of the local community.
To educate and inform our community about legislation - both state and federal which impact our civil liberty.
