Assalaam alaikum - what an honor!
Thank you to all who came and showed their support. It really meant so much to me!
I thought I would include what I said on receiving this wonderful award as it sums up how I feel:
"I would like to thank the Permanent Commission on the Status of Hartford Women and Hartford City Hall for this tremendous honor. Women Leaders Transcending all limits is a wonderful subject to focus on.
As a Muslim Woman I am very aware that there is a lot of misinformation about the status of women in Islam. Truth be
told, many still are not aware of their amazing achievements. As member of the Speakers Bureau I have a whole
presentation on just this subject. "Women in Islam" - In the state of CT there are many incredible Muslim women who work tirelessly as teachers in our public schools, as doctors in CT hospital, as lawyers, as accountants, as professors, as social workers, as mothers nurturing the next generation, as accountants, as professors and social workers.... far from the stereotype of being oppressed and submissive - these women are strong and vibrant contributors of the community.
As an CT American Muslim Woman I have been amazed at the incredible opportunities that Hartford has given me. Whether it is sharing my perspective at the monthly book discussions that we help facilitate at the Hartford Public Library or
organizing a build with Habitat on South Marshall Street, or coordinating a shelter serve, or setting up a team for the Walk Against Hunger- As the President of the Muslim Coalition of Connecticut I am very aware that Hartford is truly an amazing place to come together to build bridges of understanding and respect. There are many institutions in Hartford who work with us and I am honored to be part of the effort to serve those in Hartford.
Thank you so much for this amazing honor."
